Day 95

Another update on the caterpillars:

Around 9am, I could only locate the 2 babies. There were lots of dried leaves left, but no signs of the bigger ones. I'm a bit sad, but it's okay. They're only moths. If they were butterflies, I might try to protect them.

Then, around 2pm, my dad went outside. He told me he noticed one of the littler ones was on the edge of the pot! Naturally, I had to go and see if it was really leaving the pot. If that's true, it's a strong possibility the bigger ones walked off! When I came out, the little one was on the edge. But I think it was looking for something to eat. So, I trimmed off a small tomato branch so it could eat. It's fun watching them eat.

As I was photographing the little ones and watching them eat, I noticed the soil moving and I thought, hello!, there's the one that burrowed yesterday!! And yes, I dug him right up.
It's quite an ugly thang, losing its pretty green color and eye-like pattern. It was also quite a fast mover too! I wonder how long before it reaches full pupa stage.

And if you check out my Pineapples tab, it looks like there's a black caterpillar enjoying the green onions! Oy, is this caterpillar month??

Around 5pm, I went back out to check on the little caterpillars to see if they needed more leaves to munch on when the hubbaster saw more movements in the soil! I dug up two more of the caterpillars! I ended up placing them in a plastic container to hopefully contain them (no pics... next time) and hopefully track their developments. I also noticed that one of the little ones had barely been moving and I thought it was dying. But, it turned out it was preparing itself for a molting stage! I caught some pictures!!!
It had the hardest time getting rid of its old skin once it was off as you can see in the last few pictures. The last picture shows it got flipped around. That was bc I was trying to get it to eat but I guess it wasn't ready for that yet...

Sidenote: The cherry tomatoes in a brown bag with an apple are still green.
